Staniel Cay – Thunderball Grotto

Since we missed a lot of the fun at Staniel Cay on the way down, we made sure to stop on our way back north. We slid in just before lunch, dropped the anchor and dinghied to Thunderball Grotto first. The grotto got its name from the 1965 James Bond film “Thunderball”. The underwater scenes were filmed here.

It’s a large rock with a open–topped grotto inside that people like to snorkel. It’s like swimming into a cave that has a skylight. At low tide, which we carefully timed, you can simply swim through the tunnel from west to east without ducking under the water. Now, of course, we also went through the ‘window’ where you have to dive down under the surface and swim through a hole to get inside. It’s not as bad as it sounds because you have a snorkel, mask and fins. This means you can see that the window is about 6 feet wide and the rock wall thickness is only about three feet and your fins make short work of that. You’re inside before you know it.

Lots of fish, coral and tourists. A definite must–see but it doesn’t take long to see it.
