Great Guana Cay

We made a 1 hour sunset hop south in hopes of finding internet at Black Point on Great Guana Cay. No luck upon arrival so we planned to move again in the morning. When we woke up, we had some coverage so we stayed. We were able to check phone messages, read email and get some work done.

A local establishment makes morning radio announcements on channel 16 so we heard about the 2 for 1 Rum Punch Happy Hour from 4-7 on Tuesdays at Scorpios. What luck! This is Tuesday.

The bar was very casual and easy going. The prices were reasonable so it didn’t take long before the place was full of cruisers and some locals. There were big tables so you simply joined whoever was already there. The rum punch was good. We shared some well seasoned meatballs, conch fritters, coconut shrimp and spicy wings with the table. They had a local DJ who brilliantly played a mix of the best 2 minutes from every recognizable dance tune from the 80s and 90s.

This island scores well. The local market had a nice smattering of groceries. The gal that works the register was very nice. There are a few bar/restaurants that are easy to identify. The island has a water spigot at the public dock where boaters can refill tanks. That’s very unusual. And they have a trash bin at the public dock where you can leave your garbage. They don’t charge for this either but do request a small donation ($2/bag suggested).

Tomorrow we’ll do another short jump to Little Farmers Cay. The goal is to get anchored in time for the Farmers First Friday in February Festival (5Fs). Oddly, it starts on Thursday. Seems like lucky timing that we’re in range at the right time. We’ve heard mixed reviews about how wonderful it may or may not be but I’m sure it’ll be a spectacle.
