Titusville - Space Coast

We’ve been eeking under bridges because there is still a small flood happening here in Florida. Remember the coat hanger flag from Manteo, it’s back up on top of the mast and absolutely everything else is off. This makes us roughly 63’5 at best guess. As we approach a fixed height bridge, we use our binoculars to read the clearance boards. If it’s gonna be close, which is happening more than is convenient, I sit out on the bow and Mike inches us up to the bridge. At the very last possible second, if the coat hanger flag touches the bridge, I have to judge whether it’s too low and get Mike to frantically reverse before the mast hits the bridge. So far we have properly judged when to even give it a try. The flag has touched three bridges but the mast has not. FYI local fishermen on the shore are pessimists. There have been a few bridges where we see the clearance board and just know we can’t make it. So we stop short, pull over to the side, drop our anchor and wait for low tide.

We went to Kennedy Space Center today. They are expanding beyond just NASA. Now Blue Origin and SpaceX are based out there too. We did wonder where all the folks who work for those companies are living and spending their big salaries. It’s definitely not Titusville.

On the Uber ride out the causeway we saw wild pigs on the side of the road. Yep wild pigs! Then we got our first wild alligator sighting during the bus tour of the launch pads. Add to than a bunch of bald eagles. We saw SpaceX’s launch pad, 39A, where they have those rockets return and land! And we saw launch pad 39B where NASA plans to restart its manned missions to the moon and then Mars. It was a really eclectic tour.

The Visitor Center was a great stop for space geeks. Lots of different exhibits. 3D IMAX of the last shuttle run to the Space Station. Fun hands on activities and simulators. We stayed all day. Who knew Canada made the robotic arm for the Atlantis Shuttle AND they made it a southpaw?
