What do you do if your sailboat is too tall to get under a bridge? If you’re Mike, you go up the mast and take down all of the gadgets that stick up. He even rigged up a little flag out of red tape and a coat hanger. It sticks above the mast level by a few inches and out in front by about a foot. It’s an early warning system for whether we’re about to hit the bridge. It won’t give us much time to react but it’s better than nothing.
So backing up a bit, Manteo is experiencing a small flooding issue. It’s currently only about a foot above normal high tide but we need that extra little bit to get under the bridge. There’s more windy weather coming tomorrow so the flood is likely to get worse. There are a couple other sailboats in the same situation here at the marina. So, we took the dinghy down to the bridge this morning at high tide and took pictures of the Height Board. It said roughly 64 feet from the water to the bridge. That’s not quite enough. we’ve made ourselves as short as we can. If the water drops a bit more by low tide this afternoon, we’ll make a run for it.
