George Town - Settling In

The weather forecast is similar every day. High around 80, low around 73, wind about 15–20 knots, with occasional rain showers. If you’re paying attention, you can see the rain coming for miles away. Plenty of time to hop in the dinghy and get back to the boat.

We are a little socially challenged but we have found that the big picnic tables in the shade at Chat ‘n’ Chill really are a great place to meet people. We’ve been expanding our circle of acquaintances by about 2 boats/day. There are currently 256 boats in the harbor. We plan to stay about 1 more week so it’s unlikely, at the current rate, that we will meet everyone.

Today, I employed an old Wooster Ct trick. I have noticed that other people’s chores seem to have their own magnetic field. If you want to chat with the neighbors, go outside and do a chore. They will get curious and come ask what you’re doing. In a marina, it’s a great way to meet people. We’re in an anchorage so I wasn’t sure if it would be the same but our Lazy Bag (that holds the main sail) is having trouble with its zipper. The original thread is giving out inch by inch. I have some upholstery thread and needles that I use to reattach it. There is almost always another spot after each sailing expedition. Pretty soon the zipper will be held on by a series of my fixes. This process requires you to stand on the coach roof carefully following the original holes made by a much stronger needle. It’s windy so the boat is moving, the boom that the bag is on is swinging, and the bag wants to flap in the wind. A few small fixes can take 30 minutes. A fellow on another boat got so curious that he got in his dinghy and came over to talk about it. He offered to let us use his sewing machine. So, now we met another boater and we’re going to have cocktails with them later.
