The Berry Islands - Bird Cay

The big wind did come. We were happy to be in the marina. The poor folks who didn’t get a slip were tossed about by wind and waves out on anchor. The famous sugar sand was not quite heavy enough to give good holding for their anchors. That had to be a rough night. Now that the weather has passed, there is a mass exodus from Great Harbor Cay and we joined it. The harbor entry has been carved out of stone. We were too focused on the way in to take a picture, so Mike got one as I drove out.

We’ve moved on to Bird Cay in the southern part of the Berry Islands. We dropped anchor in about 7 feet of water around 3:30pm, put on our shortie wetsuits, fins, etc. and jumped in. The anchor looked well buried in sand and seaweed. Mike proceeded to clean the bottom of the boat. With the current trying to thwart him, he got a great workout. I explored close to the boat because the current really was noticeable. No fish or coral but that makes for an easier anchorage.

Back on board it was shower and cocktail time. Before long, three other sailboats had joined us. I’m sure they’re enjoying the quiet night too. Tomorrow we’ll head toward New Providence. If we’re making good time we’ll scoot on by and head for Highbourne Cay in the Exumas. We’ll know, as we pass New Providence, whether we’re making the right headway. If not, we’ll stop and perhaps take a turn through Nassau.
