Elizabeth City really welcomes boaters. They have free docks along the shoreline and clean public restrooms. We are staying on the Jennette Brothers Dock. They are a seafood distributor who also allows boaters to tie up for free. All they ask is that for each night you stay on their dock, please eat a meal at a local restaurant. No problem. There are plenty to choose from.
Getting out of the swamp was more pea soup, lurking logs and low hanging branches. We got up at dawn to slip through the Dismal Swamp Visitor Center pedestrian drawbridge while it was still open. They leave the drawbridge up at night to keep out unwanted foot traffic. No need to lock any gates, just raise the one and only drawbridge. We made it to Elizabeth City in time for lunch. Found a great bistro a few blocks from our dock. We may hold here for a day or so to wait for the NE winds to die down before we aim for Manteo on Roanoke Island.
