Got a start on our 2023-2024 winter trip down the coast and over to the Bahamas. Not much wind but we did a small jump 20 miles South to Herrington Harbour and went ashore for lunch and a stroll.
For the past month we worked like crazy to get everything on the boat in shape for the trip but as soon as we left the slip, we noticed that the steering was super tight. Troubleshooting pointed to the rudder bearing which is beyond what we can fix.
Got very lucky and found a marina that could haul us using a weird under-the-boat travel lift. The lift got stuck on the ramp so a truck was hooked to it to pull the whole mess out. Removed the rudder and now we wait on parts. Total trip so far - 20 miles down the bay and 17 back up to South River. Total progress toward the Bahamas - maybe 3 miles.
