A Day of Opposites

We started the day at anchor just south of the South Mills Lock in the Dismal Swamp. We had a visit from a curious, swimming muskrat just before sunset. It was dead calm, dark and silent overnight.

We ended our day on anchor in busy, bustling Portsmouth, VA. The wind is brisk. There is the almost constant sound of train traffic punctuated by emergency vehicle sirens. Quite a contrast!

There is a 145 foot bridge on the ICW coming into the Norfolk area. It is so tall that it makes other nearby bridges look short. I actually called the RR lift–bridge beyond it that was only half raised to confirm the clearance. They assured me that they were raised to 75 feet and we had plenty of clearance.

The marinas here don’t want any transient boats. They are happy to sell you fuel but that’s it.

We’ve successfully refueled and are waiting for the winds to die down on Saturday afternoon for our run up the Chesapeake towards home. We’ll play it by ear but the current plan is to take advantage of the calm overnight and scoot into Annapolis on Sunday.
