Great Dismal Swamp - Better Than Expected

Getting out of Norfolk is always a bit hairy with tugboats pushing cargo, barges, cruise ships, military exclusion zones, etc. It’s nice to be moving on to quieter waters. The lock tender at Deep Creek Lock is a history major who loves to tell stories. He and his dog kept us well entertained. That was a thoroughly enjoyable lock passage.

The swamp ditch is slim. We found a submerged log and some low–hanging overhead branches while traveling today. No major damage, just bumps and thumps. We’re staying on one of the free docks with our companions who came through the lock with us. We also met some locals who pulled up to the dock in an actively sinking jon boat and invited us to their Tiny House just up the trail. We were busy getting settled and preparing diner and cocktails so we stayed with the boat. Even though I was sure Dueling Banjos was playing in the background, we decided to go looking for them later. They were friendly, more than a little drunk and no one died yet.
